Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari has announced that FASTags will be introduced in all toll lanes over the coming 4 years in the country. The Union Minister made the claim as he spoke at the 2018 SIAM Annual Convention in Delhi.
In a bid to regulate traffic congestion at toll plazas, the Government had introduced the system of RFID tags called FASTags which can be stuck on to the windshield of the car and one can top up their respective account via online payment. The amount of the toll automatically gets deducted while passing under the scanner in the FASTag toll lane thereby reducing traffic by creating a smoother flow.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) had recently announced its decision to retail the FASTags through Indian Oil petrol pumps across the country. While presently the tags can be obtained from banks including SBI, Axis, ICICI, Federal and Syndicate, the move to rope in Indian Oil will certainly escalate the process and increase the number of people availing the facility.
